Dr. Harvey Fred McCrory Endowed Scholarship Fund

In most organizations, there is usually one person who epitomizes that group.  For the MVMA, Dr. McCrory was that person.  He was the first person we saw at our meetings; he was the person to contact if you had a problem or a question regarding veterinary medicine in Mississippi for over 30 years.  His duties ranged from a faculty member at MSU, to state veterinarian, to the executive secretary for the MVMA and the Board of Veterinary Medicine, and too many others to list.

I first met Dr. Fred as a senior veterinary student in 1982 while on preceptorship in the Jackson.  After I introduced myself, Dr. Fred responded, “you must be Hoss Brett’s son” and told me how we were related.  At every MVMA winter meeting, he’d look for me and ask how his “Georgia cousin was” and how I was doing in practice.  He made me and many others feel special.  He had a genuine concern for us all and a way with people that few can match.

Few people have the opportunity to cast a broad stroke of influence in any area; Dr. Fred did that for many years and was an icon in our profession, in his community, and in his service work.

His contributions to MSU, the MVMA, and society in general are being honored by the formation of the Dr. Harvey F. McCrory Endowment Fund through the university’s development office for the College of Veterinary Medicine at Mississippi State University.  The principle of this endowment will never be used.  The interest and investment income will be used to fund a scholarship to a senior veterinary student at MSU-CVM.  The recipient will be a Mississippi resident who has shown the qualities that Dr. McCrory is known for – leadership, service and high ethical standards.

Contributions can be sent to:

I hope you will join me and the other members of your MVMA Executive Board in honoring our friend and colleague and assisting the next generation of veterinarians.

Jim Brett, D.V.M.

AVMA Alternate Delegate
